Recently i spoke at length with someone who claims to be a financial analyst. We'll call him "Fiat". I don't know the guy, but he took a great deal of his time to explain to me why we're in the position we're in. He confirmed what many already know and many more are pretending isn't true; that the economy is in deep, deep trouble. He said the bottom is going to fall out and the dollar will become worthless. This means many people will lose their investments -- CD's, stocks, savings, etc, *poof*. More importantly, the US could be thrown into a state of anarchy overnight. Law enforcement might not be getting paid and that alone ought to give you an idea of the resulting mayhem that awaits us.

Now here's the kicker: Fiat works for a company that sells precious metals such as bullion and collectible coins. I already knew much what he was telling me to be true, but i wanted to see if he was using the truth as a sales pitch. And so came the question, "How much are you thinking of investing?". Gotchya! Or so i thought. I gave him a very small figure (less than 5K i told him). I thought for sure the conversation would dry up, but it didn't. He continued to talk to me and invited me to call anytime. He answered all the questions i had at the time and many more i never thought to ask.

I wanted to know what product would suit me best. He said he watches who's buying what, specifically buys over 1 mil., because these are some of the guys who are making policy and are in the know. He said the trend is that ~99% of the big buys are all low-grade collectible coins. Why? Fiat said that when the government calls in the gold, as it has done in the past, and he has reason to belive it will again, it will be illegal to own it... except for low-grade collectables. He said that's why the elite are buying it. So i'm thinking about this and wondering why i would care? Gold or silver, in whatever form, is what it is, right? He said that besides running the risk of jail if you're caught with it, how would you spend it? He told me that when the government called in the gold in the past, they penilized those caught with it with a $10,000 fine and 10 years in prison and this was in the 1930's! He also said people were offered a 10% reward for turning in others. This did 2 things: 1) It made it impossible to use illegal gold as currency (how can you buy food when the vendor can't accept it) and 2) it eliminated the need to task law enforcement with going door to door demanding the gold. In the height of the economic crises of the period, your neighbors would be happy to do that job. However, Fiat told me, you were allowed to keep collectible coins. He said everybody else got screwed because they were forced to give up their gold at the current market value. Shortly after all the gold had been confiscated, the price of gold shot up 30%. Those with private gold (collectible coins) could sell when they wanted.

I've been mentioning gold all through this, but there are other precious metals. I asked about Platinum and Fiat said it wasn't a good idea because it hasn't been monetized (no country is using it as currency, though he said China was buying a lot of it, though that means little as it's used in catalytic converters). What about silver? He said that would be my best choice because 1) it's rarer than gold and 2) it's value is climbing at a faster rate.

So, in the end, he recommended low-grade silver collectible coins as the best investment and spendable currency for when the bubble bursts. And it's going to burst, which, in part, is why i chose the name "Fiat".

Refuting Myths about Gold

I can't afford the risk of investing in gold:

Wrong. The real risk is in not having any gold. If you do not own gold, you have put 100% of your portfolio at risk to go to zero. Every investment is a risk. The value of cash can go to zero with runaway inflation. The value of stocks can go to zero after bankruptcy. The value of land can go nearly to zero in a depression when there are no buyers, and you have no ability to pay an assessed property tax, and the government puts the property up for auction to pay the tax.
