Cop pulls you over: After you stop, in a safe location off the side of the road, what's the first thing you do? Turn off the ignition and roll down the window? Why? You don't have to do this and, as a matter of fact, it's best if you don't. How do you know it was a "cop" that pulled you over? Is there a law that requires you roll down your window? Let's assume it is a real cop, as is likely to be the case, and he asks you to roll down the window. Fine, but there's no need to roll it down all the way. Opening your window too far is only inviting them to stick their head inside and search your car; something they have no right to do unless they have reasonable cause. So you rolled down the window an inch or so to be able to communicate better. Good. Now the cop asks you, "do you know why i pulled you over?". Why do you think they ask that? The majority of people know they did something wrong and will dutifully provide the officer with an answer like, "uh, i know i was going a little too fast". Congratulations! You just incriminated yourself! That's why they ask the question in the first place. You did their work for them. What you should've said is, "no sir, i don't". Make them work for their money. Realizing your answer, the officer may suspect that you are well informed and that pushing what may well be a dubious charge is not worth the paper work. So... they may let you get away with the speeding charge (and you're allowed 5mph over the limit in at least some states by the way) and now they ask if they may search your car. Of course it is expected that since they dropped the speeding violation that, in good faith, you should submit. Don't. When asked if they may search your car, simply answer, "i'd rather you didn't sir". Exercise your rights, or they WILL disappear!

The above situation happened to me just a month or so ago. One of the questions i was asked is where i was coming from. My answer was, "i'd rather not say". The officer then said, "the Brown's?". This stunned me, as i had just spent the day at Ed and Elain's home. Being curious, i answered, "yes", just to see what would happen next. I didn't have to tell him anything, and i probably shouldn't have, but i wanted to see what would happen to someone who had visited with the Brown's. He ran my license and, upon returning to my car, told me he'd let me go on the speeding deal. He then asked if he could search my car and i said, "i'd rather if you didn't". My answer pissed him off, but he let me go. Had he searched my car he would've found nothing. I knew that, but instead of submitting blindly to authority, i exercised my right to deny a search.-- ZDN
