THINGS I'VE LEARNED FROM BEING A RON PAUL SUPPORTER

I became an instant Ron Paul supporter when I heard him say in a debate something to the effect that:

we're fretting about third world nations that don't have an army, navy or air force and don't have any nuclear weapons while during the Cold War we went toe-to-toe with the Soviets who had an army, navy and air force and had 40,000 nukes pointed at us.

As soon as I heard it, I knew he was right and I was wrong and I had a lot of learning to do. Well, I got busy reading books and stuff online and talking with people and here's some of the stuff that I would like to thank Ron Paul for opening my eyes to:

I learned about the Federal Reserve and the the inflation tax and how this is one of the most important and least understood issues of all.

I learned that if the government could easily function without the revenues it gets from the income tax.

I learned that we are are an empire and that our foreign policy needs to be re-examined if we ever hope to combat terrorism.

I learned how international organizations (UN, NAFTA, CAFTA, World Bank, IMF, etc.) threaten our national sovereignty by trumping our Constitution with their dictates.

I learned that the media is more controlled and controlling than I ever imagined.

I learned that the Bill of Rights doesn't grant us any rights, but rather goes out of it's way to deny the government from infringing upon our rights.

I learned that we've already forfeited many of the civil liberties to the government of which the Bill of Rights was designed to protect us from.

I learned the difference between collectivism and individualism. Between a democracy and a republic. Between isolationism and non-interventionism. Between republican and conservative.

I learned that by ignoring the Constitution we undermine the checks and balances built into it.

I learned what is meant by the rule of law versus the rule of man.

I learned that security can not be achieved by sacrificing liberty.

I learned that there's solutions to our nation's toughest problems and miraculously it's all contained in a short document written over 200 years ago.

I learned that each and every one of us not only can make a difference, but it's our duty to stand up a do our part.

I learned that our similarities are MUCH greater than our differences.

I learned that education is the key.

I learned all of this and so much more in the past four months. These are all things that I KNOW to be true. I will do my best to teach my children these ideas. I will teach them to teach their children. I will share the ideas of liberty and the constitution to as many as I can. I will remain vigilant. I will remain involved. Dr. Paul cured my apathy.

THE MYTH OF THE SURGE

It's a cold, gray day in December, and I'm walking down Sixtieth Street in the Dora district of Baghdad, one of the most violent and fearsome of the city's no-go zones. Devastated by five years of clashes between American forces, Shiite militias, Sunni resistance groups and Al Qaeda, much of Dora is now a ghost town. This is what "victory" looks like in a once upscale neighborhood of Iraq: Lakes of mud and sewage fill the streets. Mountains of trash stagnate in the pungent liquid. Most of the windows in the sand-colored homes are broken, and the wind blows through them, whistling eerily. House after house is deserted, bullet holes pockmarking their walls, their doors open and unguarded, many emptied of furniture. What few furnishings remain are covered by a thick layer of the fine dust that invades every space in Iraq. Looming over the homes are twelve-foot-high security walls built by the Americans to separate warring factions and confine people to their own neighborhood. Emptied and destroyed by civil war, walled off by President Bush's much-heralded "surge," Dora feels more like a desolate, post-apocalyptic maze of concrete tunnels than a living, inhabited neighborhood. Apart from our footsteps, there is complete silence.

THE ELECTION THAT MIGHT NOT HAPPEN

The necessary architecture may already be in place. On May 4 last year, the White House issued the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive, key parts of which remain classified and hence shrouded from public view. The directive outlines procedures to respond to a “catastrophic emergency,” defined broadly as “any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions.” Of course previous administrations also had emergency plans. But the Bush directive transfers power from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to the White House, where the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism is assigned the job of “National Continuity Coordinator”.
