FORMER FBI TRANSLATOR MAKES SHOCKING ALLEGATIONS

BURYING IRAQ

Michael Holden (Reuters) reports that 55 people are dead from two Baghdad bombings "within a few minutes of each other in a crowded Baghdad shopping area". CBS and AP estimate 130 people were wounded and explains "Many of the victims were teens or young adults, and four were women, police and officials at three hospitals said." Borzou Daragahi (Los Angeles Times) quotes eye witness Kareem Abdullah, "I ran outside to see what was going on, only to have the second blast going off. I could see fire and smoke. I saw people thrown to the ground. I couldn't tell if they were unconscious or dead." CNN states it was a bombing and then "a sucide bomber" exploding immediately after.

THE AFGHAN HERO WHO DIED IN GUANTÁNAMO

On February 5, the New York Times published a front-page story by Carlotta Gall and myself, Time Runs Out for an Afghan Held by the U.S., about Abdul Razzaq Hekmati, a 68-year old Afghan detainee who died in Guantánamo on December 30, 2007, in which we established that Mr. Hekmati, known to the authorities in Guantánamo as Abdul Razzak, had – contrary to assertions that he was involved in both al-Qaeda and the Taliban – helped free three significant anti-Taliban commanders from a Taliban jail in 1999, but that no significant effort had been made in Guantánamo to find witnesses who could easily have verified his story, which he had repeated throughout his five-year detention without charge or trial.

FRIDAY: 27 IRAQIS KILLED, 33 WOUNDED

Today, Mosul was the scene of multiple bombings just as Baghdad was recovering from yesterday's major bombing in Karrada. Overall, at least 27 Iraqis were killed and 33 more were wounded across the country. No Coalition deaths were reported. Also, Shi'ite Cleric Moqtada al-Sadr issued a statement explaining his long absence to followers, while pilgrims in Najaf observed the anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad's death.

THURSDAY: 97 IRAQIS KILLED, 148 IRAQIS WOUNDED

At least 97 Iraqis were killed and 148 more were injured in the latest attacks, which included a major double bombing in central Baghdad. Meanwhile, 2000 American soldiers are scheduled to return home as part of a drawdown in troops. Also, the Interior Ministry is researching how to allow Iraqi journalists to carry weapons for self-protection.

THE IMPERIAL PRESIDENCY IS HERE TO STAY

“He has had fervent support from legal thinkers who worship at the altar of a strong executive branch. The United States signed an international convention banning torture, which is also against federal law, but former Bush Justice Department official John Yoo, asked in 2005 if the president could encourage a suspected terrorist to talk by crushing his child’s genitals, didn’t say no. He said, “I think it depends on why the president thinks he needs to do that.”"

“This indulgent approach contrasts with the thinking of conservatives 50 years ago, who thought the presidency was evolving toward virtual dictatorship. A lot of today’s conservatives agree, but wish it would evolve faster.”

THE MCCONJOB-'LEFT BEHIND' CONNECTION

Last month, hard-line conservative Pastor John Hagee, founder of Christians United for Israel, announced his support for Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) candidacy for president. Despite Hagee’s numerous bigoted remarks — including his claim that the Catholic church is “the Great Whore” and a “false cult system” — McCain said that he was “very honored” by the endorsement.

THE BANALITY OF THE SURVEILLANCE STATE

Independent of revelations yesterday that the FBI has been abusing its NSL powers for years, it was also reported that the Federal Government is now launching “a domestic intelligence system through computer networks that analyze vast amounts of police information.” The system will store broad new categories of data about the behavior of Americans — from the mildly suspicious to the perfectly innocuous — and will create “new power to discern links among people, patterns of behavior and other hidden clues.”
