The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it. -- Albert Einstein
In Riyadh, King Abdullah, urged him to put more effort into brokering a US-sponsored Palestine-Israel peace deal which has suffered a serous blow due to the Israeli recent lethal raids in the Gaza Strip and settlement activities in the West Bank.
The report contains some shocking and alarming statements which demand further attention and analysis. The most unnerving idea put forth is that the preemptive use of nuclear weapons must remain in the NATO toolkit as a viable option for confronting entities which pose an "imminent threat" to global security.
Fallon's recent resignation may have seemed abrupt to many, but it was a well-orchestrated move. His interview in Esquire depicted him as highly critical of the Bush administration's policy on Iran; the magazine described him as the only thing standing between the administration and their newest war plan. Further, his resignation and "Secretary of Defense Robert Gates's handling of [it] is the greatest and most public break in the Bush team's handling of preparations for war against Iran that we are ever likely to see," wrote respected commentators and former CIA analysts Bill and Kathy Christison on 12 March. "Gates has in fact publicly associated himself with the resignation by saying it was the right thing for Fallon to do, and Gates said he had accepted the resignation without telling Bush first."
Nelson Mandela touched on one of the energizing roles of Cuba when he spelt out in his homage to the Comandante during his visit to South Africa following the liquidation of the Apartheid regime.
"We and all the peoples of the Free World are honored to have you here. And by the Free World we refer to the peoples whose blood has been shed profusely to liquidate imperialism. Consider South Africa as your land. We shall not forget the decisive role you played militarily in destroying the South African army. You came thousands of miles to participate in the freedom struggle with us. You fought nobly, unstintingly and shed your blood to ensure our freedom. Without you our freedom would not have been consummated."
Obviously such views were in contrast to the architects of Cuba’s annihilation. These avalanches of death-dealing hatred had nothing to do with the familiar claptrap that the island of socialism had repudiated all the vestiges of human rights and democracy. The heights of vulgarity scaled by the practitioners of exterminism were exhibited by General Alexander Haig, one of President’s Reagan’s henchmen, when he fulminated in a meeting of the National Security Council : "You just give me the word and I’ll turn that [f'ing] little island into a parking lot."
“What has emerged is extensive human and societal wreckage, and the rise of a selfish class characterized by men such as President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, the late Enron CEO Ken Lay, and WorldCOM CEO Bernie Ebbers,” Velvel says, adding, “and hundreds of thousands or, maybe millions, more, who share their rotten values.”
UNITED NATIONS -- In the months leading up to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, the Bush administration threatened trade reprisals against friendly countries who withheld their support, spied on its allies, and pressed for the recall of U.N. envoys that resisted U.S. pressure to endorse the war, according to an upcoming book by a top Chilean diplomat.
Oh, so it wasn't really a "coalition of the willing". Imagine my surprise. -- ZDN
By the way, I would reach out to the first George Bush. You know, one of the things that I think George H.W. Bush doesn’t get enough credit for was his foreign policy team and the way that he helped negotiate the end of the Cold War and prosecuted the Gulf War.
'Cold War 101': A sustained confrontation designed to make war profiteers wealthy, including, but not limited to, defense contractors, their stock holders and the bankers that financed both sides. Of course this differs not from most/all other wars, including Vietnam and our occupation of the ME. -- ZDN
What’s described below isn’t going to happen tomorrow, but the banking elite are clearly thinking about how They can force all of us to eat this slop. In Russia, I hear there’s a saying that describes the situation with the mob at all levels of society:
Responding to news of US President George W Bush approval of military aid to Kosovo, Russia's ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin warned that such a move could lead to "new terrorist clashes in the Balkans."
An employee looking to steal confidential information from his employer sneaks into what should be a secure back room after hours. He pulls charts and files from a top-level financial meeting and slides them into his briefcase before heading back out.
What the insider doesn't know is that his shoes picked up hundreds of tiny radio frequency identification (RFID) chips that had been scattered across the floor.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte teenager has died after being shocked with a Taser during a confrontation with police at the grocery store where he worked.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said 17-year-old Darryl Wayne died Thursday. An autopsy is pending.
The FBI has recently adopted a novel investigative technique: posting hyperlinks that purport to be illegal videos of minors having sex, and then raiding the homes of anyone willing to click on them.
I don't condone kiddy porn, but this is yet another unlawful disaster waiting to happen. First of all, it's entrapment, plain and simple. Secondly, i doubt there is any way the Feds could possibly know they're raiding the right home, which opens the door for all kinds of problems. There is nothing stopping anyone from using a proxy to hide/alter their location, as there is nothing stopping them from connecting to their neighbors unsecured wireless network, thereby implicating innocent people. -- ZDN
Associated Press president Tom Curley says his news organization does not buy the government's argument that one of its photographers arrested in Iraq was working on behalf of the enemy, and he alleged the US is rounding up journalists in an attempt to control information.
We Atlanta Grandmothers entered the U.S. Army Recruiting Station on Ponce de Leon Avenue at 9:30 am, engaged the recruiters in conversation, and asked to enlist in order to take the place of young soldiers. When our offer was turned down, we refused to leave the property. We were arrested for criminal trespass at 10:30 am, taken to the Fulton County Jail for processing, and released 12 hours later on our own recognizance.
The TrueMajority.org "IranMobile", a Dr. Strangelovian thermonuclear missle/bomb that rises for launch 20 feet in the air with George W. Bush astride, came to Charlottesville, Va., as part of the http://www.NotAnotherWar.org campaign to stop an impending war on Iran.
The unethical dark side of New York’s new governor, David Paterson, is finally being exposed and it reveals a veteran lawmaker who had multiple extramarital affairs with a series of women and illegally mingled campaign committee funds with his romantic engagements.
As the world marks the fifth anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq this week, mostly with protests and indignation, a group of Iraqi politicians, intellectuals and tribal leaders have appealed to the United Nations to take control of the war-torn country and save Iraqis from "looming catastrophe".
Bill is back after a one week absence and he hits it out of the park with a strong indictment of John McCain's status as the best candidate to answer the infamous 3:00AM phone call. Maher points out that McCain may be a maverick...but when it comes to the war in Iraq, he is a replica of George Bush...and that has to disqualify him from answering the phone...let alone having his finger near or on anything remotely resembling a trigger.
More than a dozen journalists have been killed since 2000. Many appear to have been targeted because of their attempts to dig into allegations of corruption.
Charges have rarely been filed, including in the 2006 slaying in Moscow of Anna Politkovskaya, an investigative reporter who won acclaim for her reporting of atrocities against civilians in war-scarred Chechnya.
Our rulers have abolished our privacy. They are now free to eavesdrop on all of our phone and email conversations without a warrant; our financial records are an open book to the IRS and myriad other federal bureaucracies; they hide behind bushes (literally)waiting to nab us for purchasing too much liquor or cigarettes across the state line; they set up speed traps to ticket us in places like I-85 outside of Atlanta where, because of construction, there are three different speed limits that change about every mile and a half; and they have declared the right to imprison any of us indefinitely without due process if THEY decide you are an "enemy combatant."
"That 1,000+ plane formation was several miles long by several miles wide. Even if the lead plane hit their target (WWII hit rate percentages were about 20% for the Norden bomb site) where do you think all of the other bombs from all of those other planes went?
"They hit homes, hospitals, schools, drug stores, food stores, power plants, sewage plants, etc. Everything that you would expect in a city. Since most of the able bodied men were all off fighting, the inhabitants they murdered from 20,000 feet were women and children.
I suspect that like many neoconservatives (McCain was their preferred candidate back in 1999 and they're having paroxysms now that he's the presumptive Republican nominee), McCain is in more love with the idea of war in the abstract than in apprehension of any definable objectives in Iraq or understanding of the challenges facing us there.
Hundreds of veterans who gathered outside Washington last weekend to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan are returning to their communities across the country with the goal of stoking resistance to the Iraq war from inside the US military.
GAZA CITY - The family had been mourning for 16-year-old Ahmed Abu Salamah. What was left of what was thought to be his body had been buried. After two weeks of mourning, they found Ahmed alive in the intensive care unit at Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital.
But a boy had been buried. And, a family had spent two weeks outside the intensive care unit, believing the boy inside was theirs. It was their boy who had died.
At least 25 Iraqis were killed and 20 were wounded in the latest attacks. Meanwhile, clashes in Kut and Baghdad threaten to end a unilateral ceasefire observed by the Mahdi Army. One American soldier was killed and four more were wounded in a rocket or mortar attack south of the capital.
* The Iraq war is bankrupting our country (and see this). Don't we have any say in whether our country remains solvent?
* Without massive vote fraud, you would not have "won reelection" in 2004
* You lied in saying that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, and most of the American people did not learn we had been deceived until after your "reelection"
* You lied -- and have kept on lying continuously up until today -- in linking Iraq and 9/11
however, even if poppy harvests don’t bring him enough income to feed his family, he has no other recourse but to plant poppy because if he doesn’t plant the blasted poppy, your ordinary Taleban warrior or terrorist comes and shoots him.
The farmers are at the low end of the totem pole here; the poppy they grow, and which has increased in production since the U.S. occupation (by design, not accident), travels through Turkey, a U.S. ally, and supplies the majority of Europe's heroin market. Who all is profiting i do not know, but Sibel Edmond's, former Turkish translator for the FBI, implicates people in very high places within U.S. government. -- ZDN
A couple weeks ago Peter Welch (D-VT) went ballistic when he caught the Bush Regime in its latest blatant attempt to transfer billions of dollars in taxpayer money to its corrupt campaign contributors and financiers. Since then, Welch and Henry Waxman have been on the move via the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
So when we say that life only exists in a material organism, we ought to say that life only manifests itself in association with such an organism, and that when it is dissociated from matter we know nothing of its existence. We have no right to say that it is extinct. All that we know is that it is no longer manifest it has gone out of our ken.
The hack was noticed Thursday morning by Ed Felten, a computer scientist who has been asked to investigate voting-machine discrepancies in the state's primary election.
Food shortages; high fuel costs, housing foreclosures, bank failures, the falling dollar and assorted saber rattling all seem to indicate that ‘the boys in the backroom’ are getting all sub rosa before they go nova.
It becomes especially clear when The Scarlet Pimpernel, Bin Laden, starts doing his Baron Samedi impressions and popping up out of the grave and on to your dinner table.
It takes one a lot of courage to be brave enough (read unashamed) to celebrate a 60 year history of ethnic cleansing, apartheid, occupation, racism and war crimes. And it looks like the main Jewish bodies in the UK have decided to work hand-in-hand, taking their pride in that history to a new level this year by organising the "Salute to Israel" parade in London next June.
When you say you are going to be away for a couple of weeks, “have a nice holiday” is often the response. To explain that you are going to Gaza can meet with a blank look and even when you say Palestine this is confused with Pakistan. Maybe I am being hard but with a husband who has dedicated his later life to do all he can for the plight of Palestinians I feel, like him, that the Israel/Palestine “conflict” is at the heart of world peace and everyone should know about it.
Jews were discriminated against especially in 19th century Europe when ethnocentric nation states were created by Europeans (who are now abandoning the concept for a European Union!). A minority of Western European Jews egged on and supported by colonial powers of the time (primarily France and England) created its own ethnocentric nationalistic paradigm called Zionism as a response (originally supposedly to benefit Eastern European Jews). With the support of primarily the British government (and other allies in WWI), they planned and executed a strategy to establish a Jewish state in Palestine at the expense of the native Christians and Muslims. Thus, 530 villages and towns were completely depopulated between 1947-1950 and, in the six decades that followed, most of the remaining land was taken over. Today, the remaining Palestinians live as either 10th class citizens or under occupation with no citizenship on the still shrinking reservations left for us (less than 10% of historic Palestine). Of the 10 million Palestinians in the world, 7 million are refugees or displaced people. Israel is now heavily funded by our taxes (over $1 trillion spent so far per a study published in the Christian Science Monitor) and protected by a US hegemony that prevents the International community from forcing Israel to comply with human rights and International law (Israel is in violations of 65 UN Security Council Resolutions and over 200 UN General Assembly Resolution and shielded from many others by use of 35 US Vetoes).
McCain refuses to meet with the USS Liberty survivors, but runs off to Israel to kiss the Zionist's feet. This 'Bucket of bolts' will have your kids dying in Iran while Zionists' children will be sitting in Harvard.
What is the proper word for the claim by Hillary Clinton and the more factually disinclined supporters of her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination -- made in speeches, briefings and interviews (including one by this reporter with the candidate) -- that she has always been a critic of the North American Free Trade Agreement?
Now that we know from the 11,000 pages of Clinton White House documents released this week that former First Lady was an ardent advocate for NAFTA; now that we know she held at least five meetings to strategize about how to win congressional approval of the deal; now that we know she was in the thick of the manuevering to block the efforts of labor, farm, environmental and human rights groups to get a better agreement. Now that we know all of this, how should we assess the claim that Hillary's heart has always beaten to a fair-trade rhythm?
Shortly after 9/11, the FBI begins to suspect that Anwar Al Aulaqi, an imam to several of the 9/11 hijackers, may have had some connection to the 9/11 plot. They interview him repeatedly, but cannot find enough evidence to charge him, and he cannot be deported since he is a US citizen.
Ahmed Idris Nasreddin is quietly removed from the US and UN terrorist financier lists. Neither the US nor the UN publicly announces the decision or explains why his name is no longer on an updated list of financiers. Nasreddin, a 78-year old businessman based in Italy and Switzerland, was formally listed in 2002 due to his ties with the banned Al Taqwa Bank (see November 7, 2001). That bank was considered one of the top funders for al-Qaeda and other militant groups until it was banned in late 2001.
